If you don’t, let us enlighten you. Schat’s Bakkery is located on Main Street in the small, Eastern Sierra, city of Bishop, California. They have been home to the original sheepherder bread since the early 1900s, however a trademark did not exist until 1938. This European-style bakery sells homemade sweets, breads, and sandwiches. According to the Schat’s family, the bakery was introduced to the Owens Valley during the Gold Rush, as immigrants had a longing for their traditional homeland bread. At Schatz, all bread is shaped by hand and baked in stone ovens. There is a second location in Mammoth Lakes, also on Main Street, however, the original location is Bishop is best in our opinion.
