This hidden gem is located at 12808 Victory Boulevard in North Hollywood and has been serving the San Fernando Valley since 1958. Owners Ace and Ed Libby have a second location in Palm Springs as well, but the Tonga Hut NoHo location is the first.
Although, the bar might be on the smaller side, it has a fabulous vibe, strong drinks, and an outdoor pet-friendly patio! Kick back, relax, and let the tropical vibes take over!
If you stop by any day of the week between 4 and 8PM, it’s happy hour. Additionally, Thursday thru Sunday, you can snack on some food from Durango’s Tacos- the Durango crew will come around, take your order, and prepare the food right on the patio. Be Aware – If it is outside of the aforementioned time frame, food is not available. Food is always available at the Palm Springs location.
Another cute touch by Tonga is their water cups; served in souvenir cups that you can take home, collect all the colors!
If you are a local, make your mark by completing Tonga Hut’s Grog Log challenge. This year-long challenge features 78 tiki drinks out of the Beachbum Berry Grog Log book. You will pay as you go, and there is no telling which drink you will get when.
What do you get if you complete the challenge?
~ You become an official member of the Loyal Order of the Drooling Bastard.
~ You will get to make a plaque that will be forever hung on the wall of the Tonga Hut.
~ You will get $1 off drinks in perpetuity.
~ You will get bragging rights. 😊
~ You will have definitely established yourself as a local or regular.
We have not made the decision to conquer the Grog Log yet, but we did try three drinks while on our visit…
~ Tonga Punch Bowl – Light & Dark Rums, Orange Curacao, & Tropical Juices.
~ Scorpion Bowl – Light Rum & Brandy, Orgeat (Almond Liqueur), and Exotic Juices.
~ Nutty Chi Chi – A Twist on a Pina Colada with Vodka instead of Rum and Macadamia Nut Liqueur.
If you like Pina coladas and getting caught in the rain…or if you just like good tropical drinks and a chill vibe, this spot is worth a visit. We will absolutely be back.
