Also known as the Gibraltar of the Pacific, this California coastal city, is known for its huge, extinct, volcanic peak, Morro Rock. “El Morro,” as named by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, is the last of volcanoes formed 23 million years ago, spanning from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. This roughly 600 feet tall rock, is a State Historic landmark and serves as a bird sanctuary for nesting Peregrine Falcons, as well as other aviation variety.
This seaside city has become a popular tourist destination as it is filled with lagoons, trails, shopping, dining, and more. The Morro Bay Beach also draws in a lot of people. While it is dangerous to go into, it is beautiful to photograph. The rough ocean atmosphere alongside the manmade jetty that exists, creates some of the most dangerous waters in all of California. While your average joe may not get into these waters, daredevil surfers gamble their fate and take on these gnarly waves. When we say gamble, we really mean gamble – These waters lure in Great White Sharks as well because of its violent current and marine life. While we do not encourage going for a dip, we highly recommend bringing a beach chair and taking in the swells for yourself.
Aside from hiking around the bay/rock, we checked out the town as well, and we think these spots deserve a visit…
~ Three Stacks and a Rock Brewing Company – Formerly the Morro Bay Aquarium – this location is the only brewery in Morro Bay! With tasty craft beers, food, and a killer view of Morro Rock, this is the hangout spot! The tasting room pays homage to the Aquarium with signs and infrastructure from the retired location. Fun Fact – Troy used to come here as a child and feed the seals.
~ Crills Salt Water Taffy – An iconic spot in the area, which speaks for itself. Grab some taffy and mix and match the flavors. The original location is down by the docks.
~ The Shell Shop – All we have to say is SHELL YEAH! Since 1955, the Thomas family has operated this insane store. Filled with the largest selection of seashells on the Central Coast, you will not be able to leave without getting a one-of-a-kind piece.
Morro Bay definitely deserves a spot on your bucket list. Filled with a range of hotels, you can also camp in the area. Bring your sneakers, a good camera, and a life jacket if you dare to enter the water!
You have rocked our world,
