You may have read in our Vegas posts that we almost always see some type of show when we are in town. While what we see does vary, typically we go to see Cirque du Soleil. What you may not know is that although the Las Vegas shows are only viewable there, they do travel tours as well. The tours feature different productions that were created for touring, so basically see it while you can, otherwise it’s gone.
For those unfamiliar with Cirque du Soleil, this Canadian entertainment company is the biggest modern-day circus in the world! Founded in 1984 by onetime street performers, Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix, and made profitable by Franco Dragone in the 1980s, this circus is unlike anything you have ever seen! Think flames, water, stunts, INSANE acrobatics, and more. It’s not your olden day ball juggling act!
With all of that said, we are happy to say that Cirque du Soleil was just in LA! Their production, OVO, was at the Microsoft Theater and is now en route to Alberta, Canada! It is insect themed and described as “teaming with life!” You’ve got to go see it for yourself! Each and every show is vastly different and overly stimulating! This was not our favorite, but it was great, just like the others!!
This may be a bit of a recap if you’ve read past posts, but some of the Cirque du Soleil shows that we have seen and highly RECOMMEND are:
· KA – MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas – The battlefields are alive in KA as the stage shifts, and warriors are forced to fight on the land and in the sky. This spectacle combines martial arts, pyrotechnics, and a unique setting.
· Michael Jackson ONE – Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – An electrifying fusion of acrobatics, dance, and visuals immersing the audience into the world of Michael’s music.
· O – Bellagio Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – Weaving a tapestry of artistry, surrealism, and theatrical romance, this water show pays tribute to the beauty of theatre.
· The Beatles LOVE – Mirage Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – Set to an iconic soundtrack, this is a multi-sensory journey. This theatre-in-the-round technological and psychedelic spectacle continues to be one of the most celebrated shows in the world. ***The Mirage Hotel & Casino is going away this year, so this show may be too…see it while you can!
· Zumanity – New York New York Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – The erotic side of Cirque du Soleil. This Cabaret style production guides audience members through comedy, taboo sex topics, cage dances, body contortion, and various realms of sexuality and pleasure. ***Sadly, this show retired in 2020.
· Alegria – Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA – TOURING – This all-time classic reimagined for a new generation to fall in love with. At the heart of a kingdom that has lost its king, Alegria witnesses the power struggle at play between the old and new movement yearning for hope and renewal. ***Touring in Sacramento, CA from July 29 – August 28, 2022.
· VOLTA – Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA – TOURING – Volta is about a young boy named Waz who once was full of life and aspirations but has recently fallen into the world of The Greys; the everyman of life. Seeing a chance of finding love and acceptance through fame, Waz becomes a contestant on The Mr. Wow Show. ***This show is no longer touring, and has retired.
· Amaluna – Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro, CA – TOURING – After directing her daughter’s coming of age ceremony, honoring femininity, renewal, rebirth, and balance, Queen Prospera causes a storm. A group of young men wash up on the isle, triggering an epic love story between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. Theirs is a love that will be tested. ***This is currently not touring.
***Descriptions are directly from Cirque du Soleil’s website, so it most accurately reflects the show’s theme. The productions are incredibly creative and leave room to interpretation, so we wanted to ensure that you got their vision from the descriptions.***
Next on our bucket list is:
· Mystere – Treasure Island Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – Mystere has you laughing along with life. Inside the imagination is a playful place to be. This world is a jaunty-music-filled adventure bright with color and athleticism. ***This is one of the longest standing Las Vegas shows and somehow, we have not seen it yet!
· Mad Apple – New York New York Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV – Coming this month!! Mad Apple is a delicious Cirque du Soleil cocktail of high-flying acrobatics, music, dance, comedy, and magic celebrating the city that never sleeps. ***We’ve never heard that New York doesn’t sleep, but apparently it competes with Las Vegas! This new production is taking the residency spot that once was Zumanity.
AND…
We just got back from Las Vegas again! Coming up in our future Las Vegas post, read about Amystika. The new show that Criss Angel has created with Cirque du Soleil’s visionary, Franco Dragone.
Life is a circus, so we might as well enjoy the ride,
