It’s no secret that most people will stop for gas, food, or a bathroom on the way to and from Vegas. We like to stop in Baker, California. Located in the Mojave Desert, this town is about 90 miles from Las Vegas. It has less than 800 people living in it and economically thrives off tourism. Baker is home to the world’s tallest thermometer, Alien Fresh Jerky, and the Mad Greek Café.
The world’s tallest thermometer is 134 feet tall and commemorates the world’s hottest recorded temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit in its neighboring town of Death Valley. Alien Fresh Jerky is a unique shop that sells a variety of jerky, alien themed merchandise, and other road snacks.
Now for the Mad Greek Café…
This 32-year-old iconic spot is on Baker Blvd and serves Mediterranean food. After fueling up the car, we stop here for a taste of Greece. We typically order lamb gyros and fried zucchini, but there is a huge menu that crosses over into other cuisines as well. Fun Fact – Mad Greek Café is known for their milkshakes. While you may be 6,348 miles from Greece, your eyes will see white and blue details throughout emulating the Grecian artistry. There are Greek flags and statues all over!
Although, this town seems empty and underwhelming, this is the perfect place to break up the drive or stretch your legs. We love stopping here, and we aren’t the only ones. According to owner, Larry Dabour, he brings in about four million dollars a year solely from travel between Los Angeles and Las Vegas! There is a second Mad Greek Café located in Primm that is run by his Larry’s children, but it is much smaller. We recommend going to Baker.
Long story short, check out The Mad Greek Café on your way to or from Vegas. It’s a must for us!
If you don’t like the gyro, put some Windex on it,
